Sewing is the act of joining a fabric or another flexible material with a needle and thread. It is known as the oldest technique related to textiles. Before human beings learned the art of making fabric, they had to know the art of sewing. The survival of early human civilization is thanks to the sewing technique, enabling our forefathers to survive extreme weather conditions. The needle, whether of bone, silver, bronze, steel, or some other metal, was always the same in design: a thin shaft with a point at one end and a hole or eye for receiving the thread at the other end. This simple construction with a thread-carrying eye had been an ingenious improvement on the sharp bone, stick, or other object used to pierce a hole through which a lacing then had to be passed [1].The exact beginning of sewing as a method of joining material is difficult to locate in history. However, there is evidence from various civilizations of sewing tools used for making garments from naturally occurring materials such as leather. The needle has been centre stage in early sewing development. Early pieces of evidence have been found from the Palaeolithic era. Early nee-dles were made from bones and sewing thread was made from plant-based mate-rial such as tree bark or animal sinew. This combination of sewing elements was used to join materials, and its legacy is followed to this day by modern sewing machines (Figure 1.1).With the development of human civilization, the Egyptians invented the art of yarn manufacturing using spinning wheels around 5000 years ago. Garments found in ancient Egypt provide evidence of embroidery on clothes. The sewing technology kept evolving in the Middle Ages and, during the time of the Renaissance, sewing was a highly rated skill, and sewn garments were highly regarded as a symbol of wealth and respect in society.The modern history of sewing machines started around the time of the Industrial Revolution. Before then, sewing was a tedious task and making gar-ments took days to complete. Making or mending a dress took a lot of time and effort, and was predominantly the task of women. It could take days to make a new piece of cloth. Buying cloth from a store was a luxury that the general public was unable to afford..
